Street Banners for the City of Surrey

I collaborated with artist Lay Hoon (aka Arty Guava) to create this Canada-themed banner design for the City of Surrey. The banners were installed around City Centre in Surrey in July 2025.

Titled A Tapestry of Home, this banner was created to celebrate the richness and diversity of Canada’s identity. Commissioned by the City of Surrey—and our first collaboration of this kind—we combined our styles (my bold geometry and Lay Hoon’s fluid, organic forms) to reflect the beauty and values of the country we call home.

In the design, you’ll find clusters of triangles symbolizing Canada’s vast forests, a subtle nod to hockey as a shared cultural touchpoint, and iconic imagery like the moose and maple leaf. At the heart of each banner, a pair of stylized hands frames the maple leaf—representing unity, care, and national pride.

We also wanted to honour Canada’s deep connection to nature. The bright, geometric suns in the background serve as a reminder of optimism and possibility, rooting the work in both landscape and future.
